As a former running back, I remember doing various footwork drills in order to improve my quickness, speed and agility. These workouts usually included ladders, cones, bags, etc. Even to this day I still love to incorporate footwork drills into my exercises because it helps with overall body movement throughout the day, and it’s just a lot of fun to do.
Regardless of whether you’re an athlete or not, I challenge you to try this workout. Check out the video below, which shows how one of the best RB’s in today’s game (and one of Kendall’s favorite players), Le’Veon Bell, completes this drill.
Adding athletic workouts like this one to your normal exercise routine gives a nice change of pace to anyone who may not be used to doing footwork drills, and at the same time will help you get a good sweat in, especially in this summer heat!
It doesn’t matter if you’ve never stepped onto a field or court in your entire life. If you start incorporating athletic training concepts into your personal workout regimen, you’ll be surprised at the transformation your body will make and the benefits you gain from it.
One way to modify this particular workout if you’re just starting out is to do high knees in place. Be sure to pump your arms to ensure maximum leg drive and explosiveness. As you get more comfortable with this movement, try doing high knees down a line for 10, 15, or 20 yards.
To increase the intensity of this workout, try adding in a couple sets of side shuffles back and forth for 10-20 yards. This will help increase hip flexibility and glute strength. If you’re really feeling bold, add in a few sets of back pedals for 10-20 yards. Be sure to bend your knees and hips, keeping your chest slightly forward to ensure good posture.
Get up, get out there and get moving! You can do it!
