In honor of #tbt, I thought I’d FINALLY share the story of my Third Grade Takeover at my sister’s school (the teaching sister, not the 3rd grader sister… Too bad they weren’t at the same school!). In short, it was a BLAST! Third graders are hilarious these days… And to have 20+ of them all in the same room for like, 8 hours, well, let’s just say I deserved my nap that evening!
Dannie’s class was (I’m told) on their near-best behavior. They’d FaceTimed and Skyped with me before– one time they interviewed me to learn how to write biographies; oh and then there was our chat about the technology behind food blogging for STEM Week– so they were incredibly surprised to finally see me in person! What didn’t help was Dannie and I were inadvertently wearing basically the same outfit (down to the bun and the watch!), so we kept the kids (and the administration) guessing who was who all day. Fun times! Hooray for having a faux twin!
Since it was the last week of school, we had to make the learning extra fun… and delicious. We combined our math and science time into a most decadent lesson about fractions, measuring, and states of matter when we made our 2-minute microwave molten chocolate cake. After the fire drill (who does that the last week of school?!?) we did a little more food science and made microwave chocolate chip cookies! AND we got our language arts in by reviewing our sequencing words and how to write clear instructions for someone else to follow our recipe.
My favorite quote of the day: “MAN, THIS WAS FUN! WE DIDN’T DO ANY WORK ALLLLLLL DAY!” They were having such a great time measuring, mixing, critiquing each other’s batter, watching their cakes and cookies rise, and writing their recipes that they didn’t even realize they’d had a full day of curriculum. And the best part? They got to eat their classwork! Job well done, if I do say so myself! School should always be like this!
It was THAT good! đ
