I think the King James Version of the Bible—all the thees, thous, thiseths and thateths— makes God seem more intimidating and unapproachable than He really is.
Now obviously the King of kings and Lord of lords—the one who torched Sodom and Gommorrah; called a bear out of the woods to eat the kids who made fun of Elijah; parted the Red Sea for the children of Israel to cross and drowned the Egyptian army—is truly formidable and one to be revered with the utmost respect. However, that doesn’t make Him inaccessible.
We are all created in God’s image; thus He is just as approachable as any one of us. Sure, an audience with King James himself could be intimidating, but God’s word says,
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16 KJV)
Another version puts it this way:
“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens — Jesus the Son of God — let us hold fast to the confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tested in every way as we are, yet without sin. Therefore let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us at the proper time.” (Hebrews 4:14-16 HCSB)
Truth is, we can access God anytime we want. The scriptures prove our ability to come to Him with our needs and His ability to empathize with our troubles and grant us grace. In fact, it is His desire to develop an intimate relationship with each one of us. But we must initiate by coming to Him.
