It happens. You get that last-minute invitation to visit a co-worker or in-law’s home for Thanksgiving and you’re like great… what do I bring? It’s Tuesday and there’s no time for fancy shenanigans. There are a few ways you can approach this: a) ask directly, b) wing it, or c) show up empty-handed. If you’re like me, Option C isn’t really an option, so that leaves asking or figuring it out yourself. In my experience, you usually end up doing both.
When you ask, no one really wants to tell you to bring anything. Maybe the host is still clinging to the idea that they’ve got it all together and need/want zero help, or maybe they don’t know you well enough to trust your culinary skills and would rather die than see a tray of grocery store rolls or cookies condemn their table. Or maybe they truly have no expectations and just want you to come and enjoy the festivities… who knows. So when you ask, you might not get a real answer; which then brings us to option b: winging it.
Usually I’ll ask a follow-up question similar to what’s on the menu? to get an idea of bases that are already covered. Usually no one expects you to roll in with a turkey (in fact, if you’re asked to bring one… last minute… this is probably a set up for a less than mutually beneficial relationship) so appetizers, sides and desserts are great go-to dishes. If you know the crowd, bring something everyone might like (God forbid you have to bring home all of what you brought over!) If you have no idea who’s coming, what’s being served or how anything will be prepared, bring something you like so you know you’ll have at least one thing you actually want to eat. Just keepin’ it real.
