Understanding Your God-Given Purpose
Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God. (2 Corinthians 9:11, NLT)
If mission is our what, purpose is our why. God takes joy in blessing us, but He does so with very specific intentions. We are blessed in order to pass along those blessings to others. When we do this, we reflect the true nature of Christ, causing those whom we bless to give thanks to God and be drawn back toward Him. That’s the purpose behind our God-given mission.
You are blessed, and it’s for a reason! God has deliberately instilled in us specific gifts, has entrusted us with certain resources, and has placed us in intentionally crafted spheres of influence to make an impact on those around us in the way they need to be reached. The challenge for us is keeping others in mind instead of getting caught up in managing our own lives.
The busyness of life and the weight of our responsibilities can make it far too easy to forget our mission to reflect Christ and lead others to Him. We must remember that everything we’ve been given is to serve this purpose, and there are countless ways we can use what we have to achieve this end.
CONSIDER THIS:
Sometimes the things we take for granted—our financial security, vehicles, homes, etc.—are the very things we can use to make a difference in the lives of others. What are some things you’ve been blessed with that you could use to serve, bless or empower others?
TAKE ACTION:
Think of someone you can be a blessing to this week. It’s important that you see how something you’re skilled in can be used to enrich the lives of others and give glory to God.
Discover Your Personal Mission
God has given each of us the ability to do certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, then prophesy whenever you can—as often as your faith is strong enough to receive a message from God. If your gift is that of serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, do a good job of teaching. If you are a preacher, see to it that your sermons are strong and helpful. If God has given you money, be generous in helping others with it. If God has given you administrative ability and put you in charge of the work of others, take the responsibility seriously. Those who offer comfort to the sorrowing should do so with Christian cheer. (Romans 12:6–8, TLB)
Each and every one of us was created a unique individual. God did that for a reason! Like all the different parts of the body, we all look and function differently and are strategically located to serve a specific purpose. When we each do our part, the body operates cohesively and is able to achieve its full potential. As believers God called, chose, and fit us together in the same way— each with unique gifts, passions, experiences and a customized part to play. No wonder we’re called the body of Christ!
Our mission as believers is to draw others to Christ by reflecting His image and using our gifts to serve in love. We make that personal by figuring out how best we can activate the talents and skills with which we were gifted to make a difference in the lives of others and ultimately reveal Christ through our actions. Whether it’s getting involved in ministry at your church, starting or joining a community outreach initiative to help people in need, or using your personal or professional skills to help your church or another organization serve its mission, there are many ways to invest the talents God has given you back into His Kingdom and lead others to Him in doing so.
CONSIDER THIS:
What are your gifts? If you’re not sure yet, be diligent in asking God to show you what they are and how you can use them to serve others.
TAKE ACTION:
Download this FREE thought mapping worksheet as a guide to identify your personal mission. This will help answer the “What am I supposed to be doing?” question. Your personal mission lies at the intersection of your gifts and talents, interests and passions, and others’ perception of your strengths.
You’ll find this and other practical activities like it throughout the book to guide your thinking and propel you into purpose-full action. Stay tuned for more updates on the book coming NEXT WEEK!
PS: Don’t forget your worksheet!
